Choosing a newsworthy topic

  1. Timeliness - ideas or stories that have just taken place or are seasonally appropriate
  2. Conflict - a difference of opinion, fight, or struggle
  3. Prominence - well-known people and the event in which he/she is involved
  4. Proximity - events that occur near the the reader and are therefore of interest to them
  5. Significance - an event or person that has an effect on the readers' life
  6. Human Interest - people or events that appeal to the readers' emotions

Writing a newspaper article

  • Objectivity - not influenced by personal opinion; keeping the writer's opinion out of the article
  • Angle - the point or slant to the article; the thesis of the article
  • Lead - the first paragraph of a story
  • Starting with 5 W's-who, what, when, where- from most important to least important
